Sustainable living is all about doing what we can to reduce our individual or societal use of the Earth’s natural resources. Wherever you are along your journey to living sustainably, take a look at Greystar’s handy tips:

1. A little goes a long way
Be mindful of your everyday water usage. Every drop counts so why not use the kitchen sink sprayer when washing dishes and turn off the faucet when brushing your teeth?

2. Let the sunshine in
Most of us are happier when the sun shines so take advantage of natural daylight when you can. Turn off lights in unoccupied rooms and use ENERGY STAR® (or equivalent local efficient certification standard) LED lights where possible.

3. Shop smart
We’ve all got a drawer or cabinet full of unused bags we can’t quite throw away, rather than stockpiling them it’s time to put the collection to good use. Keep reusable shopping and produce bags in your car and use them on your next trip to the grocery store.

4. Get back to basics
Use a cloth with water to clean. If something more powerful is necessary, use a product from your kitchen cabinet like vinegar or baking soda; you’ll be surprised just how well they get the job done.

5. Stick to a set temperature
Keep an eye on your thermostat and you’ll save energy and money. Your energy bill can increase by 3% for each degree the temperature is raised.

6. Conserve electricity
With the recent shift to working from home, we have all probably used more electricity than we normally would. However unplugging unused appliances, utilizing power strips and outlet timers, as well as shutting down your computer overnight can help with conserving electricity.

7. Think before you throw
Recycle all plastic, paper, aluminium, and glass products.

8. Think green
Keep the air in your home fresh by using houseplants to remove toxins from the air. The benefits are two-fold, plants clean the air and add beauty to all homes.

While these recommendations might be small, they are mighty because even the tiniest contribution can make a big difference when everyone participates. Start living sustainably today.
